Josh Cardiello
Josh Cardiello, a former Buford High School football lineman remembered for his strength on the field and loyalty off it, has died at the age of 30. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from family, friends and the wider Buford community. Mr Cardiello died early on Monday morning. His family said he passed away at 6:25am in hospital, with loved ones at his side. In a statement, his partner described holding his hand as doctors pronounced his death, calling the loss “the hardest thing I’ve ever been through” and expressing concern for the future of their young daughter, Amelia.
A standout lineman during his time at Buford High School, Mr Cardiello was known for his discipline, teamwork and quiet leadership. Former teammates and coaches have remembered him as a dependable presence who embodied commitment both in sport and in life. Personal tragedy shaped much of his later advocacy. Following the death of his brother, Jake, Mr Cardiello became involved with Who We Play For, a non-profit organisation that promotes heart screenings for young people and improved access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
His family said the organisation’s work was especially meaningful to him, noting that public access to AEDs — a cause he supported — played a role in emergency efforts during his own medical crisis. Tributes have highlighted his devotion as a friend, father and partner, as well as his willingness to support others through loss. Many in the community have provided meals, messages and practical help to his family in the days since his death.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church in Buford later this week. Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 6:00pm to 9:00pm and Saturday from 12:00pm to 2:00pm, followed by the funeral service at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Mr Cardiello’s name to Who We Play For, continuing the advocacy that became an important part of his life and legacy.
